Business English

English has undoubtedly become the lingua franca of the professional world in countless industries, and we’ve met many professionals who want their English to open doors for them.  We are well placed to help you on this journey, and excited to design a tailor-made strategy for your success.

What should you expect?

Language learning is a complex process that, alongside many other things, is highly dependent on the interests, goals, level of motivation, and learning style of the individual student - variables that vary over time as well as between students.  It is not uncommon for language students’ goals to change over time - perhaps you already have a strong understanding of the foundations of the language, but you want to use it more naturally at work, or you’re now trying to improve your argumentative power in presentations, after having worked hard on your English to land a job in London.  These different goals require different focuses, which is why tailored and personalised teaching is so important.

Given the emphasis on personalisation, it is difficult to explain what exactly you’ll receive during these Business English classes.  As such, we have written a few real examples below below to give you a taste.  Once we learn more about you, as well as your goals, challenges and interests through the pre-trial communications and, most importantly, the trial session, we’ll be able to provide a tailor-made proposal for you as an individual learner.

Some example exercises and simulations you could be doing with your teacher:

  • Give feedback to staff with different tolerance levels for stress and criticism.

  • Consider and answer difficult questions to a presentation you are preparing for.

  • Develop a strategy for achieving the goals of your conference, networking or meeting.

  • Learn and put into practice interview strategies, with live interviews.

As a summary, you’ll:

  • Work with a compassionate and experienced teacher who invests in you and your goals.

  • Continuously identify and work on specific areas of your English.

  • Receive highly personalised materials and exercises based on your interests and goals outside of pure language learning.

  • Practice in simulated professional situations with your teacher. This might include giving feedback, public speaking, debating, writing persuasive arguments, and more.

  • Enjoy the experience!

Materials and Resources

  • We use authentic materials relevant to the specific industry of the student.

  • Personalised materials created by the teacher to target specific goals and needs.  This might be simulated emails, requests for proposals, elevator pitches, or something else - as is needed and desired.

  • When there is a focus on grammar, we use Lingolia English and Perfect English Grammar for study materials, although teachers often provide personalised exercises for each student.

Assessment and Feedback

  • Depending on the requirements and preferences of the student, feedback and assessment is done in different ways across a spectrum from relaxed to strict.  Feedback is given every lesson, with more detailed reports and explanations available to the student if and when desired.

  • One option is for your teacher to periodically (often monthly) create simulations to be assessed on: coherence, grammatical range and accuracy, vocabulary, comprehensibility.  This will give you a quantified score to work with, and see how you’re progressing.

Classroom Environment

  • Understanding that learning any language requires a lot of time, energy, and effort, we strive to create a learning environment that is conducive to both progress and enjoyment.  We do this by getting to know our students and caring about them and their lives, asking good questions and sharing interesting stories.  Reading our reviews is perhaps the best way to understand what we mean!

  • Our teachers are able, however, to manipulate the learning environment to target specific goals.  For example, for someone practicing speaking to difficult audiences, our teachers can increase the level of stress, the difficulty of questions, and even the impoliteness of responses.  Similarly, we can add elements of movement and cognitive challenges to make the situation more difficult, thus representing the difficulties of the real world.

  • Please think about what might be best for you, and speak to your teacher for ideas!

Your Teacher

  • Your teacher will be a TEFL-qualified, professional, friendly and caring individual who is invested in you and your progress.  All of our teachers are native English-speakers and are learning or have learned a foreign language.  This way, they understand your challenges and your journey!  We have teachers who have had a wide variety of professional experiences, and your teacher will therefore be matched with you depending on your needs.

  • We’re really proud of the quality of our teachers and the connections built in-class.  This is a core part of our philosophy - that you feel cared for.

Ilona, M&A Lawyer, Poland

Business English

Ilona was keen to shift her focus onto English-speaking clients and organisations, and wanted to develop her general competency and competence in the context of Mergers and Acquisitions Law.

Our classes include a range of focuses, including grammatical accuracy in the context of formal documentation, legal vocabulary, clarity of pronunciation, and more.  Thanks to the flexibility of classes, we refocus as and when urgent matters arise, such as when an interview or important meeting or call comes up.

"I would highly recommend classes with Rohan. He is always prepared for classes. He always takes into account the needs and interests of the students. The lessons with Rohan are both interesting and professional. Rohan’s lessons have helped me to break through my speaking barrier and increase my vocabulary. Rohan teaches me legal English including M&A topics in a practical, engaging and always interesting way. He also helped me prepare for the job interview by simulating such an interview, discussing helpful phrases as well as helping me converse in English just before the interviews. His help and commitment allowed me to approach the interview without worrying about my English language skills."
